---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
"You've got to find what you love,' Jobs says

This is the text of the Commencement address by Steve Jobs, CEO of Apple Computer and of Pixar Animation Studios, delivered on June 12, 2005.

I am honored to be with you today at your commencement from one of the finest universities in the world. I never graduated from college. Truth be told, this is the closest I've ever gotten to a college graduation. Today I want to tell you three stories from my life. That's it. No big deal. Just three stories.

The first story is about connecting the dots.

I dropped out of Reed College after the first 6 months, but then stayed around as a drop-in for another 18 months or so before I really quit. So why did I drop out?

It started before I was born. My biological mother was a young, unwed college graduate student, and she decided to put me up for adoption. She felt very strongly that I should be adopted by college graduates, so everything was all set for me to be adopted at birth by a lawyer and his wife. Except that when I popped out they decided at the last minute that they really wanted a girl. So my parents, who were on a waiting list, got a call in the middle of the night asking: "We have an unexpected baby boy; do you want him?" They said: "Of course." My biological mother later found out that my mother had never graduated from college and that my father had never graduated from high school. She refused to sign the final adoption papers. She only relented a few months later when my parents promised that I would someday go to college.

And 17 years later I did go to college. But I naively chose a college that was almost as expensive as Stanford, and all of my working-class parents' savings were being spent on my college tuition. After six months, I couldn't see the value in it. I had no idea what I wanted to do with my life and no idea how college was going to help me figure it out. And here I was spending all of the money my parents had saved their entire life. So I decided to drop out and trust that it would all work out OK. It was pretty scary at the time, but looking back it was one of the best decisions I ever made. The minute I dropped out I could stop taking the required classes that didn't interest me, and begin dropping in on the ones that looked interesting.

It wasn't all romantic. I didn't have a dorm room, so I slept on the floor in friends' rooms, I returned coke bottles for the 5? deposits to buy food with, and I would walk the 7 miles across town every Sunday night to get one good meal a week at the Hare Krishna temple. I loved it. And much of what I stumbled into by following my curiosity and intuition turned out to be priceless later on. Let me give you one example:

Reed College at that time offered perhaps the best calligraphy instruction in the country. Throughout the campus every poster, every label on every drawer, was beautifully hand calligraphed. Because I had dropped out and didn't have to take the normal classes, I decided to take a calligraphy class to learn how to do this. I learned about serif and san serif typefaces, about varying the amount of space between different letter combinations, about what makes great typography great. It was beautiful, historical, artistically subtle in a way that science can't capture, and I found it fascinating.

None of this had even a hope of any practical application in my life. But ten years later, when we were designing the first Macintosh computer, it all came back to me. And we designed it all into the Mac. It was the first computer with beautiful typography. If I had never dropped in on that single course in college, the Mac would have never had multiple typefaces or proportionally spaced fonts. And since Windows just copied the Mac, its likely that no personal computer would have them. If I had never dropped out, I would have never dropped in on this calligraphy class, and personal computers might not have the wonderful typography that they do. Of course it was impossible to connect the dots looking forward when I was in college. But it was very, very clear looking backwards ten years later.

Again,

i had to do another picture based on beyonce lyrics since 4 comes out tomorrow.
so here it is.
hope everyone's summer is awesomeee.

let's start over. stop fighting about the same old thing.
let's start over. we can't let our good love die.
maybe we can start all over, give love another life.

i can see that we're not happy here,
so why would we keep pretending that there's nothing there?
maybe you like it, well i don't.
and maybe you'll settle, well i won't.

Crooked Letter, Crooked Letter: A Novel (P.S.)

In the 1970s, Larry Ott and Silas "32" Jones were boyhood pals in a small town in rural Mississippi. Their worlds were as different as night and day: Larry was the child of lower-middle-class white parents, and Silas, the son of a poor, black single mother. But then Larry took a girl to a drive-in movie and she was never seen or heard from again. He never confessed . . . and was never charged.
More than twenty years have passed. Larry lives a solitary, shunned existence, never able to rise above the whispers of suspicion. Silas has become the town constable. And now another girl has disappeared, forcing two men who once called each other "friend" to confront a past they've buried for decades.

Product Description
Edgar Award-winning author Tom Franklin returns with his most accomplished and resonant novel so far—an atmospheric drama set in rural Mississippi. In the late 1970s, Larry Ott and Silas "32" Jones were boyhood pals. Their worlds were as different as night and day: Larry, the child of lower-middle-class white parents, and Silas, the son of a poor, single black mother. Yet for a few months the boys stepped outside of their circumstances and shared a special bond. But then tragedy struck: Larry took a girl on a date to a drive-in movie, and she was never heard from again. She was never found and Larry never confessed, but all eyes rested on him as the culprit. The incident shook the county—and perhaps Silas most of all. His friendship with Larry was broken, and then Silas left town.
More than twenty years have passed. Larry, a mechanic, lives a solitary existence, never able to rise above the whispers of suspicion. Silas has returned as a constable. He and Larry have no reason to cross paths until another girl disappears and Larry is blamed again. And now the two men who once called each other friend are forced to confront the past they've buried and ignored for decades.
A Q&A with Author Tom Franklin

Q: Tell us a bit about your latest book Crooked Letter, Crooked Letter. How did you come up with the title?
Franklin: Title's a pneumonic device used to teach children (mostly southern children) how to spell Mississippi. M, I, crooked-letter, crooked-letter, I, crooked-letter, crooked-letter, I, humpback, humback, I.
Q: Crooked Letter, Crooked Letter is a bit of a departure from your previous two novels—Smonk and Hell at the Breech—in that it is set in contemporary times and the story line is a bit less dark. What inspired the premise for this novel and the departure from a more historical setting?
Franklin: I'd been wanting to write about a small town police officer, and I'd long had the image of a loner mechanic in my mind. When I put the two together, the story began to form. I used a lot of autobiographical stuff for Larry, the mechanic.
Q: A review in USA Today (for Hell at the Breech) stated that, “he also makes his characters rise up from the pages as if they were there with you.” …and this is certainly true in your latest novel. How do you approach the task of developing your characters and bringing them to life? Are the characters in Crooked Letter, Crooked Letter based on anyone in particular?
Franklin: They're both a combination of different facets of different people, a conglomeration of fact and fiction. I usually try to just let them begin to do what they want to do, just put them in a situation and see what they do. When they begin to surprise me, do things I hadn't anticipated, that's when it's working.

But the character of Silas "32" Jones is very loosely based on the sole police officer of the hamlet of Dickinson, Alabama, where I grew up. This guy was actually the law in a nearby mill town, and my hamlet of Dickinson fell in his tiny jurisdiction. I've always loved the idea of small town cops, especially one who might be a kind of underdog to the police forces of nearby larger towns.
Q: In Crooked Letter, Crooked Letter your two main characters are anything but stereotypical—the young black boy goes off to college to play baseball and comes back to be the town constable and the young white boy is the accused murderer and the town outcast. What, if anything, prompted you to portray these characters this way?
Franklin: No real person is a stereotype, and I try to make my characters as real as I can. We're all a mess of contradictions and secrets, strangenesses and desires, and nobody's all good or all bad. We're all somewhere in the spectrum between absolute good and absolute evil. So I just try to find a character who's fairly normal, and put him or her in a fix and see how he or she negotiates it to see, as Kurt Vonnegut says, what he or she is made of. In this case, the story as I came to understand it called for Larry to stay home and Silas to leave. If it had been the other way around, I'd still work to make the characters unstereotypical.
Q: Without giving away too much of the story, what is one thing (emotion, thought) that readers can expect to walk away with after reading this book?
Franklin: It's a sad book, but it's full of hope. Hope is what I want a reader to leave with.
Q: Historically the South has not always had a positive image in other parts of the country. How has your experience growing up and living in the rural South shaped your talent as a writer? And have you ever felt the need to justify or redeem the South’s past in any of your works?
Franklin: I think growing up in the south made me the person I am, and the writer I am comes from that. So, yes, the south's made me the writer I am. It taught me to listen to the cadences and rhythms of speech, and to notice the landscape. It also has this defeated feel, a lingering of old sin, that makes it sweet in a rotting kind of way. Much of it is poor, much is rural, and that's an interesting combination, a deep well for stories.
Q: Did you always know that you wanted to be a writer? Who are some writers, past and present, that you admire or have inspired you?
Franklin: I always knew I wanted to tell stories, one way or another. If I'd had a video camera in the mid 1970s I'm sure I'd be a filmmaker now. But I just had a portable typewriter, and so the stories I could tell were ones on paper.
Q: You are one of the most celebrated writers in the field, and have been compared to the likes of Harper Lee, William Faulkner, and Elmore Leonard. What do you believe is the one thing that sets you apart from other contemporary writers in your genre?
Franklin: What sets me apart? I honestly don't know that I’m more "apart" from other writers of my generation. Landscape plays a large role in what I write, but that's true of many other writers. My stuff is set in the south, but that's true of others as well. I don't know, honestly.
Q: As a professor of English, what is one piece of advice that you would share with aspiring writers?
Franklin: Read, starting with the classics. Read all the time. If you don't read, you won't ever be a writer. Also, write. This seems obvious, but it's amazing how many "writers" don't write very much.

Baby and Toddler Learning Fun: 50 Interactive and Developmental Activities to Enjoy with Your Child

Baby and Toddler Learning Fun: 50 Interactive and Developmental Activities to Enjoy with Your Child

It's never too early to share the joy of learning with a child! Sally Goldberg gives parents the tools to provide such rewarding experiences in an organized, fun way with this special book. Here are more than fifty entertaining activities to enjoy with very young children, with instructions for making the toys needed for play. Baby and Toddler Learning Fun also provides smart tips for enriching the home environment in other ways for baby's learning. As children grow, the activities can be easily adapted so they remain as much fun for a toddler as for an infant. It's quick and inexpensive to make the toys out of the stuff infants and toddlers already enjoy looking at or handling-plastic containers, stiff paper, brightly colored scraps of material, and other household items. This hands-on book not only helps parents teach babies important concepts about colors, shapes, letters, and numbers, but also brings parent and child closer through engaging playtimes. The activities aren't to be used as drills but rather as part of dynamic play that parent and child will enjoy. Charts help parents keep track of concepts as they are introduced. The activities are equally appropriate for children with learning delays.

My baby is UNIQUE!

My baby is UNIQUE!

Apa lagi nak ku kata, bila cempedak menjadi nangka...
Ni tak dak kena mengena dengan cempedak ka, nangka ka, hapa ka... Ni pasal Rafiqh lagi, hehe...

Sebenarnya I tengah 'hangat hati'(istilah orang utara yang bermakna marah/geram/sakit hati/yang sewaktu dengannya)... Kenapa yer kita suka sangat banding2kan baby kita dengan orang lain?! What the heck?

Ditujukan kepada mak bapak yang suka tengok anak orang lain tak sebagus anak dia, kiranya pandang anak dia laa yang hebat, anak orang lain semua lekeh2... Kot yer pun anak hang terer apa pun, jangan laa selamber badak sumbu badak berendam nak memperlekehkan anak orang lain. Piiirah, macam laa kalau anak hang boleh jalan umur 9bulan, dia dah pandai tahap gaban, besar nanti hebat segala mala. Belum tentu lagi beb! So, tak payah laa dengan bangganya hang nak kutuk2 anak orang wei! Tak salah pun nak puji anak sendiri, bagus laa, puji laa melambung tinggi tembus sampai langit ke tujuh pun, tak dak siapa nak peduli pun, insyaAllah jadi doa untuk anak hang tu. Tapi jangan sedap2 mulut nak mengata anak orang lain.

Eh eh suka hati anak aku laa nak merangkak umur 6bulan ka 7bulan ka 8bulan ka, tak merangkak langsung ka, ada susahkan hang? Amboi2 cantik bahasa kata anak aku lambat!

Apa jua performance dia, we as parents should proud... Belajar laa hargai anak, beri peluang dia explore dunia luar slowly... Setiap bayi tu unik, mereka membesar dengan stage yang berbeza... Kita sebagai ibubapa perlu beri dorongan, beri sokongan, beri bantuan... Bukan jadi pelemah mereka, tau nak kritik ja... Dah kalau setiap hari hang dok sebut anak hang lembap, lambat, malas, ni tak boleh, tu tak boleh, semua tu doa, semua tu hang pasak dalam otak anak hang, nanti sampai ke tua laa dia pegang kata2 hang tu...

You all mesti pernah dengar kan, pakar motivasi selalu kata, "badan kita bekerja hasil dari keyakinan akal"... Buktinya? Just keep doing same things everyday in front of him, one day nanti you will surprise to see dia buat exactly same like what you did!

Kesimpulannya:
1. Kalau nak "angkat darjat" anak sendiri, angkat laa... Tapi jangan hina anak orang. Orang lain pun ada perasaan, jangan laa senang2 nak kutuk anak dia...
2. Kasihan laa kat anak sendiri, jangan laa perkecilkan kebolehan dia.

Rafiqh boleh meniarap masa umur dia 3bulan, tapi dia stop meniarap lamaaaaa sebelum dia meniarap semula, dah terer meniarap, dia tak mengunjur pun. Bukan bermakna I tak ikuti perkembangan dia, tapi I let him do whatever he wants to do. Slowly ikut keupayaan dia, no stress no pressure! I tetap baca artikel2 tentang baby milestone, I tetap alert dengan new infos about baby development, tapi tak perlu laa I nak paksa2 Rafiqh, kan?
Sebab Rafiqh Tsuyoshi, my baby adalah bayi yang UNIK!

watching the baby moorhens the other day was a whole rollercoaster of emotions!

the above shot is a close up of a baby chick who had found this little critter to eat (2/ whole shot below) – so she was clearly doing well and independently feeding!

i spotted one baby moorhen running towards the water with a bigger moorhen chasing it, i presumed it was a parent keeping tabs on it but when it caught up with the chick it started viciously attacking it and pecking it!

the chick then swam into the water when it met a coot – who also started viciously attacking it! i was devastated watching it! but at the same time fascinated as the chick then played dead – just floating in the water (3/ see below)

the coot then swam off and the chick raised its head and swam off again (4/ see below) – swimming to an island and looking around, as if looking for its parents (5/ see below), until another coot saw him and when for him driving him back into the water again! by this time he was looking very bedraggled!

i did witness one mother try and try to feed her chick (6/ see below) but it just kept refusing the food (7/ see below) then when she swam near her other chick with no food – it instinctively went for her beak and ended up biting her! (8/ see below)

i noticed that there was often chicks at different stages of development, so one mother would have a chick that was more independent and another that was more needy (9/ see below)

after this i was nervy to watch them, and a couple of times i witnessed the more needy chicks (10/ see below) being either hit in the head (11/ see below) or even bitten by the parents – as if they were frustrated? (12/ see below)

i once watched a documentary about coots (i think) that said that the parents persecute and kill their own offspring if they are weak!

nature is fascinating!!!

hope everyone has a great weekend!

Stages of Faith: The Psychology of Human Development and the Quest for Meaning

Dr. James Fowler has asked these questions, and others like them, of nearly six hundred people. He has talked with men, women, and children of all ages, from four to eighty-eight, including Jews, Catholics, Protestants, agnostics, and atheists. In many cases, the interviews became in-depth conversations that provided rare, intimate glimpses into the various ways our lives have meaning and purpose, windows into what this books calls faith.
Faith, as approached here, is not necessarily religious, nor is it to be equated with belief. Rather, faith is a person's way of leaning into and making sense of life. More verb that noun, faith is the dynamic system of images, values, and commitments that guide one's life. It is thus universal: everyone who chooses to go on living operated by some basic faith.
Building on the contributions of such key thinkers as Piaget, Erikson, and Kohlberg, Fowler draws on a wide range of scholarship, literature, and firsthand research to present expertly and engagingly the six stages that emerge in working out the meaning of our lives--from the intuitive, imitative faith of childhood through conventional and then more independent faith to the universalizing, self-transcending faith of full maturity. Stages of Faith helps us to understand our own pilgrimage of faith, the passages of our own quest for meaning and value.

Here's the Situation: A Guide to Creeping on Chicks, Avoiding Grenades, and Getting in Your GTL on the Jersey Shore

Here's the Situation: A Guide to Creeping on Chicks, Avoiding Grenades, and Getting in Your GTL on the Jersey Shore

Here's how to get your situation up to the level of the Situation

Listen, dawg. You're probably hitting the gym, doing your tanning, and picking up fresh laundry every day. And maybe you've had some success beating up the beat and creeping on chicks in the club. But do you really think your situation is where it needs to be? Be honest with yourself, bro.

This book here will take your game to a level thought unattainable, given your physical limitations (because we can't all look like Rambo, pretty much, with our shirt off). We start with GTL-the bedrock of life itself. And then we hit the GTL Remix-the rules for getting your personal grooming did. From there it's my guide to the Jersey Shore, battle plans for the club, a primer on grenades and wingmen, and tips for ridding yourself of all levels of clinger. Then I look at the big picture: how to cook the perfect lasagna, how to find a life partner, and how to deal with being one of the most famous people on the planet-which is guaranteed if you follow my advice.

This is the bible for Situation Nation. Read it, live it, and crush it.

*what my last text in my inbox, and the last text that i’ve sent says:
Well I dont have a cellphone, but the last text in my mums inbox was: to Ashleigh my bestie: "Yeah hun.. im gunna stay at home tonie. Ohkay have fun sweetie. Love you. xoxo"
hahahah. cuuuuute huh.

*a famous person i’ve been compared to.
Gin Wigmore, and Taylor Swift when i sing.

*5 things that irritate me about the same sex/opposite sex.
umm, boys; and how they seem to be so carefree, and nothing bothers them
umm, Girls; and how they go on and on about wanting to be sooo skinny, and when they ask if their fat!
umm, Boys; and how they are really bad at texting eg. spelling, and just stupid shit.
uumm, Boys; how the dont like make-up (my bf) and i go to all this trouble every morning and he's like "why do you wear this to my house!!!!???"'
uum- Boys; and how they have shit friends.. ):

*the best thing that has happened to me this week.
Being with my boyfriend!!! not going into detail, cause family look at this hehe, but had such a cuuute time with him. (:

*weird things i do when i’m alone.
eerrm, dance with my dog, with music up very loud
walk around the house constantly looking for something to do
Just chill in my underwear!!! haha.

*how i’d spend ten thousand bucks.
Hole crap, ummm- buy a car, buy some music recording equipment (microphone, amp, recording thing) oh and buy my Dad a bass, so we could jam together.

*things i like and things i don’t like about the way i look.
errm, ok i know i say i dont like girls saying it, buut i would like to be a bit skinner! maybe just to be fit. cause im a lazy shit! hehe
uum, i like it when i have make-up on, without it i feel like shhheeeiiit! errm, i wish i had bigger boobs hehe so i dont like them now! i like my feet there not ugly (people tell me i have nice feet.

*my last night out in detail.
crap, probably my best-friends brothers 18th.. i didnt drink muuuch, just danced and sang.. and mingled with lots of people, and got shitty at my BF cause i thought he was stoned.. turned out he wasn't. ops..

*something that makes me sad when i think about it.
I'm really scared that my baby (Mai-Ling) is going to die, and i get very sad.
umm, that i have to go back to school, so do EXAMS.. (erg horrible word..) saaad
That i cant see my BF for a few days, hes away sheep farming somewhere out in the whoop-whoops.. that makes me sad.

*something i’ve lied about.
not going to say, cause family look at my Flickr.. hehe.. umm, nothing i can think of that's safe to mention... probably that i lied about being okay and not upset when i wasn't.

*would i rather be stranded on a desert island with someone i love for ten years or someone i hate for a month? explain why.
umm, i cant think of anyone i hate.. umm, id end up liking them.. ohh so it would have to be someone i love... then id probably get sick of them.. but ohwell.

*something i’m currently worrying about.
Exams, sadly my BF being away.. (im not sure what hes up to!) my dad.. um- i dunno.

*something i do without realizing.
saying stuff, and i don't remember it... and then people hold it to me! oh and of course looking in the fridge... repetitively

*lyrics that apply to my current situation/mood.
crap, i dont know.. im at home with my mummy and daddy my sisters are having sleep overs... i decided to stay home cause im tired.. (sorry Ashleigh!!!)

*a drunken story
umm, getting drunk, and very sad, and emotional and thinking of throwing myself into a fire, we were sitting around.. another story would be being a wee bit tipsy on home-made lemonade and vodka haha, and then i went outside chased after a sheep, called it "Jim Hickey" lol..? annd then, went and with my straw tried to feed a garden gnome.. and then had a cry cause it wouldn't drink it and so i spat at it, but missed and it dribbled all down my chin. hehe.

*last thing i laughed very hard about
The phone was ringing, and i couldn't be bothered answering it so Dad did, and he answered it saying "Hello, underground airways" and i nearly pissed myself.. i could not stop laughing, it ended up being my 8yr old sister.. she was staying with my Nana... and rang to talk about her day of gardening haha

*something i regret.

29/365

I hate to admit it, but that hut my heart a little bit.

"She's all laid up in bed with a broken heart
While I'm drinking Jack all alone in my local bar and we don't know how
How we got into this mad situation, only doing things out of frustration
Trying to make it work, but, man, these times are hard

She needs me now but I can't seem to find the time
I got a new job now on the unemployment line and we don't know how
How we got into this mess, is it God's test? Someone help us 'cause we're doing our best
Trying to make things work, but, man, these times are hard

But we're gonna stop by drinking our cheap bottles of wine
Sit talking up all night, saying things we haven't for a while, a while, yeah
We're smiling but we're close to tears, even after all these years
We just now got the feeling that we're meeting for the first time

She's in line at the dole with her head held high
While I just lost my job but didn't lose my pride, and we both now how
How we're going to make it work when it hurts, when you pick yourself up you get kicked to the dirt
Tryin' to make it work, but, man, these times are hard

But we're gonna start by drinking our cheap bottles of wine
Sit talking up all night, doing things we haven't for a while, a while, yeah
We're smiling but we're close to tears, even after all these years
We just now got the feeling that we're meeting for the first time

Drinking our cheap bottles of wine
Sit talking up all night, saying things we haven't for a while, a while, yeah
We're smiling but we're close to tears, even after all these years
We just now got the feeling that we're meeting for the first time

For the first time
Oh, for the first time
Yeah, for the first time
We just now got the feeling that we're meeting for the first time

Oh, these times are hard, yeah, they're making us crazy
Don't give up on me, baby
Oh, these times are hard, yeah, they're making us crazy
Don't give up on me, baby

Oh, these times are hard, yeah, they're making us crazy
Don't give up on me, baby
Oh, these times are hard, yeah, they're making us crazy
Don't give up on me, baby"

for the first time - the script

Includes a fun sing-along song by Adrienne Emberley which can be downloaded at www.scholstic.com/ifyouramonsterandyouknowit
If you're a monster and you know it, give a ROAR!
If you're a monster and you know it, give a ROAR!
If you're a monster and you know it,
and you really want to show it,
if you're a monster and you know it - give a ROAR!
Praise for THERE WAS AN OLD MONSTER!!!
